Leo is a cheeky little monkey who was born here at Ecoparque el Fenix. His mother is Potty, who was donated from the illegal pet trade.
Leo is a juvenile male who enjoys playing with his mother and friends. Spider monkey play is known as ‘grappling’ and is a form of mock-fighting. Leo is a very good climber because he has been raised in an enclosure with lots of locomotive enrichment. Swings, rope ladders and trees promote natural spider monkey climbing behaviour. In the wild spider monkeys are known as ‘acrobats of the forest!’ Leo is also very well socialized because he has always been raised in an environment with lots of other spider monkeys. This is not the case for his mother, Potty, who was taken from the wild and sold illegally as a pet.
If you would like to help fund enrichment for Leo or would like to contribute to the construction of a new social enclosure please see our ‘How to help’ page for more information or pledge a donation on-line: http://www.gofundme.com/53l8xk
