Ecoparque El Fenix

Ecopark el Fenix houses 26 monkeys from two different species: Black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and Black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra). These monkeys were taken from their home in the Mexican rainforest and sold illegally as pets. Most of them were donated to the sanctuary or rescued to provide them a better quality of life.

To capture them in the rainforest it was necessary to kill their mothers, reason why these monkeys started their lives in a very difficult way. Each one has a different personality and their physical and psychological well being is a priority.
